Arbutin
also known as Alpha-arbutin
A gentler cousin of hydroquinone — fades pigmentation slowly and steadily, without irritation.
What it actually does
Arbutin is a naturally occurring molecule (originally from bearberry leaves) that releases hydroquinone slowly when applied to skin. That slow release gives you the brightening effect without the irritation, sensitization, and regulatory headaches that come with pure hydroquinone. Alpha-arbutin is the more stable, more effective form used in Korean serums.
Who it's for
Anyone working on dark spots who finds vitamin C too irritating, or who wants to stack a second brightening mechanism on top of one they already use.
How to use it
Evening serum. Layers fine with niacinamide and tranexamic acid. As with all brighteners, daily SPF is what makes or breaks the result.
