Actives

BHA

also known as Salicylic acid

An oil-soluble exfoliant that gets inside pores — for blackheads, congestion, and texture that won't smooth out.

Acne supportAnti-aging

What it is

Beta-hydroxy acid — most commonly salicylic acid. Korean formulas often use betaine salicylate, a gentler derivative used at slightly higher percentages.

What it actually does

Salicylic acid is the only common exfoliant that's oil-soluble, which means it can travel inside an oily pore and dissolve the gunk lodged there. It also dampens inflammation, which is why it's a workhorse for active acne, not just blackheads. Korean formulas often use betaine salicylate (a gentler derivative) at higher concentrations than the 2% you see in Western SKUs.

Best for

  • Blackheads
  • Congested pores
  • Active breakouts

Not ideal for

Use with care

Not "avoid at all costs" — most K-beauty routines get away with these combos by splitting AM/PM or alternating nights. The caution is about how you layer, not whether you use them.

Pregnancy note: Consult a doctor if pregnant; topical BHA at low % is generally considered safe, but conservative use is recommended.

How to use it

Two to four nights a week to start, then build up. Always follow with moisturizer, and SPF the next morning is non-negotiable. Don't stack with AHAs the same night.

The Plug verdict

Every congested-skin routine should have one BHA product. Not two.
