Retinal

also known as Retinaldehyde, retinol

The fastest-acting OTC retinoid — smooths lines, evens tone, and unclogs pores with less irritation than retinol.

What it is

The aldehyde form of vitamin A. One conversion step from retinoic acid (tretinoin), which makes it more potent than retinol but gentler than prescription retinoids.

What it actually does

Retinoids speed up cell turnover, increase collagen production, and normalize how your pores shed dead cells. Your skin has to convert each retinoid up the chain — retinyl ester → retinol → retinal → retinoic acid (the active form). Retinal is one step from active, so it works faster than retinol with comparable irritation. Korean formulas tend to encapsulate it for stability and tolerance.

Why K-beauty uses it

Korean retinal formulas (Medicube, Numbuzin, Beauty of Joseon) are usually encapsulated at 0.05–0.1% — lower on paper than Western retinol serums, but often better tolerated at the same visible effect.

Use with care

Not "avoid at all costs" — most K-beauty routines get away with these combos by splitting AM/PM or alternating nights. The caution is about how you layer, not whether you use them.

How to use it

Evening only, on dry skin, after cleansing — a pea-sized amount for the whole face. Always pair with daily SPF in the morning; without it you're moving backwards.

The Plug verdict

The best value in anti-aging right now. Korean encapsulated retinal at 0.1% out-performs most Western 0.5% retinols on tolerance.
