What it is
Squalane is a stable, saturated version of squalene — a lipid your own skin makes. Modern squalane is plant-derived (olive or sugarcane), lightweight, and highly stable, so it doesn't go rancid the way raw plant oils can.
What it actually does
Squalane is an emollient and occlusive: it softens skin and forms a light, breathable layer that slows water loss, locking in everything you applied beneath it. Because it so closely matches skin's own oil, it absorbs cleanly without the heavy, greasy feel of many facial oils, and it's very unlikely to clog pores or irritate. It's the 'seal it all in' step.
