Microbiome & postbiotic complexes
also known as Postbiotics, ferment filtrates, lysates
Barrier-first ingredients that feed and mimic the skin's own bacterial ecosystem — the frontier of K-Beauty's calming category.
What it is
An umbrella term for skincare that supports the skin's bacterial ecosystem — prebiotics feed the microbes already living there, postbiotics are the beneficial by-products (lysates, ferments, peptides) those microbes produce. Actual live probiotics in leave-on cosmetics are rare; most 'microbiome' K-Beauty is postbiotic.
What it actually does
Reactive, over-stripped, or actively-treated skin often correlates with a disrupted skin flora. Postbiotic complexes and prebiotic sugars appear to help re-anchor a diverse bacterial population and reduce visible reactivity — less redness, more resilience, better tolerance for the rest of your routine. The evidence base is early but growing, and it's the direction Korean formulators are moving barrier care in.
Why K-beauty uses it
Korean labs (Cosmax, Kolmar) invested heavily in ferment and postbiotic tech through the late 2010s, which is why K-Beauty essences leaned on ferment filtrates years before Western brands caught on. 2026's push into 'skin microbiome' formulas is the second wave of that same work.
Best for
- Sensitive skin
- Over-treated skin
- Barrier recovery

Use with care
BHA
use cautionLow-pH acids in the same step can disrupt the microbiome layer.
→ Use on separate steps or alternate nights.
Retinal
use cautionAggressive turnover routines partly work against the microbiome layer.
→ Give the postbiotic layer time to settle before applying retinal.
Not "avoid at all costs" — most K-beauty routines get away with these combos by splitting AM/PM or alternating nights. The caution is about how you layer, not whether you use them.

- Daily
How to use it
Use as an essence, serum, or moisturizer daily, AM and PM. Especially useful as a first layer when you're re-introducing actives after a barrier crash.
The Plug verdict
The most interesting thing happening in barrier care right now. Not a miracle — but a real, mechanism-backed reason to pull back from harsher routines and see whether stability alone gives you the skin you were chasing with actives.
