Birch Sap
also known as Betula alba juice, birch juice, birch water
Tree sap used in place of water in the formula — a light, mineral-carrying hydrator that is, in the US market, almost entirely one brand's ingredient.
What it is
Sap tapped from birch trees in early spring, before the leaves come. It is mostly water carrying small amounts of sugars, minerals such as potassium and manganese, and amino acids. In a formula it usually replaces some or all of the plain water, so it appears first on the ingredient list.
What it actually does
As a water substitute it does what water does, with a little more in it — the sugars are mild humectants and the mineral content is real if small. Skin-level evidence specific to birch sap is thin: most of what is published looks at the sap's antioxidant content in a test tube rather than at what it does on a face over weeks. That is worth saying plainly, because the marketing around it is confident and the research is not. What can be said is that birch-sap formulas tend to be light, low-irritant and well tolerated, which for a hydrating layer is most of the job.
Why K-beauty uses it
Birch sap is a distinctly Korean-and-Nordic idea — using a plant's own water rather than purified water — and it sits alongside rice water and sugarcane in that family. One number worth knowing before you treat it as a category: of the 81 birch products we track, 73 are ROUND LAB. The remaining eight are spread across five brands. This is not really an ingredient trend in the US market yet so much as one brand's signature, which cuts both ways — low competition if you are searching for it, but very little to compare against on price.

The Plug verdict
Birch sap is a good hydrating base with an oversold story. Nothing wrong with it — these are pleasant, gentle, well-made products — but you are buying a light toner, not an active, and the antioxidant claims are running well ahead of the evidence. The honest reason to pick one is that the formulas around it tend to be clean and simple. Also worth naming: because a single brand owns nine-tenths of this shelf, there is essentially no price competition on birch sap in the US. That is unusual in K-beauty and it is the sort of thing our price comparison exists to show you.
