Mung Bean
also known as Vigna radiata seed extract, nokdu
Nokdu — the bean Korean women have washed their faces with for centuries, now the cleansing-and-calming ingredient of choice for sensitive, breakout-prone skin.
What it is
Extract of the mung bean, known in Korea as nokdu. Ground mung bean powder is one of the oldest recorded Korean cleansers, used as a gentle wash long before surfactants existed. Modern formulas use a water or glycerin extract of the seed.
What it actually does
Mung bean brings a mix of amino acids, vitamins and polyphenols, and the practical effect in a formula is mild cleansing with a calming, slightly sebum-absorbing quality. It is associated with reduced surface irritation and it suits skin that reacts to stronger cleansers. Be aware that the published skin research on mung bean specifically is limited — much of the confidence around it comes from long traditional use and from lab work on its antioxidant content, not from controlled trials on faces. It is a good gentle ingredient with a thin evidence file, and both halves of that are worth saying.
Why K-beauty uses it
Nokdu is one of the clearest cases of a Korean traditional remedy becoming a modern product line rather than a marketing reference. In our catalog it is heavily concentrated: of 33 mung bean products, 28 are beplain, whose whole cleansing range is built on it. That concentration is worth knowing when you compare prices — with one brand dominating, there is very little cross-shopping to do on the ingredient alone.

The Plug verdict
Mung bean is a genuinely sensible cleanser ingredient and a fairly ordinary serum ingredient, and the price difference between those two products is usually not ordinary at all. If your skin is reactive and breakout-prone, a nokdu cleansing foam is one of the easier wins in K-beauty — cheap, gentle, hard to get wrong. We would not pay a serum premium for it. And we will say what the brands will not: the traditional-use story is charming and true, and it is not the same thing as clinical evidence.
